Gadwal Silk Sarees: Lightweight Silks with Strong Borders
Share
Gadwal silk sarees come from Gadwal, a small town in Telangana known for its skilled handloom weavers. These sarees are loved because they feel light on the body but still look rich and traditional, mainly due to their strong zari borders and contrast pallus.
What Makes Gadwal Sarees Special
The most unique part of a Gadwal saree is its weaving technique.
The body and the border are woven separately and then joined together using a special interlocking method. This is why Gadwal sarees have:
• Very strong borders
• Clear contrast between body and pallu
• Long-lasting zari work
• Light overall weight
Borders and Pallu Style
Borders are the highlight of Gadwal sarees. They are usually wide and woven with gold zari, sometimes mixed remembering motifs.
The pallu is often rich and colorful, giving a beautiful contrast to the body. This makes Gadwal sarees look festive even when the body is simple.
The Border Is NOT Part of the Body Fabric
Unlike many silk sarees, Gadwal sarees use a rare technique called Kuppadam weaving.
Here, the border and body are woven separately and then locked together thread by thread.
This is why Gadwal borders never peel off or weaken easily, even after years of use.
Gadwal Sarees Change Shade in Different Light
Because of thin silk yarn and light zari, Gadwal sarees reflect light differently indoors and outdoors.
In daylight they look soft.
Under lamps they appear richer.
This dual-tone effect is natural and unique to Gadwal weaving.
