Everything About Kalamkari Print Sarees

Kalamkari is a traditional hand art that started in Andhra Pradesh more than 3000 years ago.

The word Kalamkari comes from:

  • Kalam meaning pen

  • Kari meaning work

Earlier, artists used natural dyes and bamboo pens to paint stories from Indian epics on cloth. These painted fabrics were used in temples to explain Ramayana and Mahabharata stories to people.

Over time, this art became popular on sarees.

Authentic Kalamkari mainly comes from two places:

  • Srikalahasti
Here Kalamkari is fully hand painted using a pen. Each saree is unique.

  • Machilipatnam
Here Kalamkari is done using wooden blocks to print repeated designs.

Both styles still follow traditional methods using natural colours made from plants, roots, and minerals.

Kalamkari on Silk Has Cultural Value

When Kalamkari is done on silk, it becomes suitable for festivals, weddings, and special occasions. Silk gives shine and richness, while Kalamkari adds meaning and design. This combination creates sarees that are both elegant and traditional.

Who Started Kalamkari

It was developed by local artisans and temple painters centuries ago. Families passed this skill from generation to generation. Even today, Kalamkari sarees are made by artisan communities who follow the same old techniques.
